Final Book Cover

Colour Scheme

I have being experimenting with colour on one of my draft, giving me ideas for my final design.

This is my analogous copy using blue, green and a very desaturated green.      

This is my complementary colours using green and red. I should have desaturated the red helping the green to stand out from the background.

This is monochromic colour scheme, using different shades of green. I used a prismatic green for the pig in the centre making it stand out. The other colours I used is muted greens from the centre of the colour wheel.

This is my triadic colour scheme, using green,orange and purple. I think the green and the orange need to be desaturated as they are bringing focus away from the pig in the centre.

These are my drafts which I have done from my scamp copies adding more detail and in some cases changing/improving them.

This is the original scamp which I will be drafting from, and the screenshots below are my different draft attempts and how I developed to my final draft.

This was my first attempt of my draft which is quite similar to my scamp copy. I added an extra image trying to show some of the features of the book, showing the reader some of the major objects which will be read about. I also changed how I laid out the font as I wanted the 'Wall St' to be in the same font as the sign in New York, and also added a contrasting font to show my understanding of fonts but also to show how different these two things are. I feel there is very little contrast between fonts and images, or any poetic matter in this piece so in the next I do I will try to change these problems.

I then decided to change the cover of my book with a different font for the title, which I made styled like origami made of money. I also removed the pictures from the front of the cover as I wanted to have a mature and and simplistic cover but still able to get a basic idea on what the book is about, but I also changed the author name with a black box around it to make it stand out as the book is based around him. I have changed the fonts to add some contrast to my work and also changed some images to make the reader think more when analysing the cover. I will continue to try and improve this in my next draft. 

I have now removed all the older images with filters as I felt I could have a more simplistic cover by putting smaller yet more puzzling and poetic images such as the smashed champagne bottle. Some people would think it may represent how his life smashes into pieces, but also the reference to the boats/yachts included in the book. I also put the blurb into one complete paragraph also following the simplistic look. I feel the back page is a bit bare compared to the other parts of the cover so I will try and adds some extra piece to make the cover more enjoyable. 

This is my final draft cover design which I am happy with. I have added a gold picture frame around Jordan Belfort on the author information. This is because it makes the reader question why, but after reading the quote I have also added from inside the book which explains the point of his importance. I have also made the blurb small by removing the unnecessary information focusing on the main parts of the book.

Creating Typography

 This is my font I have designed for my book cover. It is designed to look like I have made letters out of origami using money. This is a big part of my subject matter as it is extremely important in the book, and this is why I have decided to design it in this way.

 I started by cutting shapes out of a dollar note using the lasso tool, then moving it around to get different parts of the note. I put each piece into a new layer.

 I then started to build up the shape of the letter by repositioning each shape, such as here where I am making the letter T.

 I the went around the shape on a new layer with the lasso tool, then adding a gradient similar to a drop shadow which supposed to look as if I have folded it with the shadow under it.

 I then merged the layers together and adding a drop shadow to make the letter stand out from the back of the page.

 This is the finished product, and I used the same method to create the other letters for the title of my book.

This was my first attempt at making origami text. I tried the use a rectangle to create the shape of the letter. I feel this didn't work as it looks nothing like origami, and wouldn't fit with a clean looking book cover which I am going for.

Digital Type Choices

I decided to research typefaces to try and face some specific features which would fit with the style of my book cover. I have labeled features and types of the fonts for each title and then wrote about how some of them could fit with the style of my book and why, and why others wouldn't work.

Typography Moodboard

This is my moodboard on making my own type. My idea is to use the money that is themed in the book then the make it into origami type.

 

Emulation

This is how I created my emulation of one of my scamps using the method on how I made my copy.

I started by drawing each of the detailed parts and images, similar to how I drew the outline of my copy. I got some of the ideas from my pin board of my subject matter.

 I also drew the font I wanted to use for the title of my book. I then cut this out with a cutting board and cutting knife to leaving it clear to put a black sheet behind.

I then scan it into photoshop then cut out the background and placed it under the drawings I have done.

I used the magic wand tall to cut out the the edges around the design. I then added an inner shadow similar to my copy giving it a 3D effect looking like it is engraved into the book.

I scan all my drawings into photoshop the went around the outline so I could the move the street apart to fit my text down the middle in a reasonable size.

I then coloured the street in bold matt colours using the brush tool, similar to the buildings I did in my copy.

I then added the text down the street first copying the blurb from the original book, then converted it to a smart object dragging each edge to the corner giving it the specific shape.

I then started to add the reviews of the book just left aligning each of the paragraphs. I also I added speech marks trying to imply they are the reviews been spoken about. I also put at the bottom the price in a smaller font and also left aligned it.

I then added the right side which is the description about the author of the book. Once again I just copied this from the original  book and added a photo of the author. I also added a barcode and a website at the bottom of the page.

This is the finished book cover a flat copy above, but bellow is the life version which I printed and folded to see how the book cover would tern out in real life.
